The 61st Tony Awards were handed out in New York last night and held few surprises. The rock musical "Spring Awakening" by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, based on Frank Wedekind's play of the same same, picked up eight awards in total, including those for "best musical", "best score" and "best choreography". The awards for best performers went to David Hyde Pierce ("Curtains") and Christine Ebersole ("Grey Gardens"). Results in the play section were hardly more surprising with Tom Stoppard's nine-hour trilogy "The Coast of Utopia" picking up "best new play" and "best direction" among others. The Tony for Best Revival went to "Journey's End", the anti-war play that had come over from London and which had already closed the previous day.
