First Night a great success in Stuttgart
Stephen Schwartz' Broadway hit "Wicked" finally opened in Stuttgart yesterday, making it the second foreign-language production after Japan. "Wicked", based on the book by Gregory Maguire, tells the tale of Elphaba, the "Wicked Witch of the West" from the classic MGM musical film "The Wizard of Oz", that starred Judy Garland in 1939 and became one of America's all-time favorite movies. The book and now the musical tell the story of her youth and of her friendship to Glinda, who later became the Good Witch of the movie, and it raises some important questions – is someone born "wicked" or does society make him that way? In Elphaba's case it's being a green-skinned scorned outsider at school first and later the Wizard's betrayal that turn her into an angry (but not necessarily evil) witch. Her big tune "Defying Gravity" has already become a favorite for musical performers to sing at concerts and is the best Act One-Finale I've seen in a long time.
Stuttgart needn't worry about the comparison with Broadway or anywhere else. The young immensely talented cast blew the roof off the Palladium Theatre yesterday, most notably Willemijn Verkaik as Elphaba and Lucy Scherer as her blonde friend Glinda, who are both just perfect for the roles. The cast recording is due to be released in December already, a perfect christmas gift for the "Wicked" fans and collectors worldwide. And after years of recycling the same shows all over again and again, Germany finally has a brand new hit to be proud of!
