The Evening Standard Theatre Awards, the first awards of the British theatre season, were handed over at a lunchtime ceremony at the Savoy Theatre on 27 November. The musical "Hairspray" which recently opened at the Shaftesbury Theare with Michael Ball and Leanne Jones, won the award for "Best Musical", while Complicite's "A Disappearing Number" was voted "Best Play".
Anne-Marie Duff won the award for "Best Actress" for "Saint Joan" at the National Theatre, while Patrick Stewart was crowned "Best Actor" for his performance in "Macbeth" at the Chichester Festival, which also won Rupert Goold the award for "Best Director". The play, which is presently shown at the Gielgud Theatre in London will soon transfer to New York's Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Further prizes were handed to writer Polly Stenham for her debut play "The Face" as the Standard's Most Promising Playwright, while actor Stephen Wight was named Outstanding Newcomer for his performances in "Don Juan in Soho" at the Donmar Warehouse and "Dealer's Choice" at the Menier Chocolate Factory, which will transfer to the West End next month.
